How are you using the mirror and the window?

The mirror and the window...

I don't know a whole lot about the remarkable Film Producer, Australian Baz Luhrmann.  He has produced box office smashes such Moulin Rouge, Strictly Ballroom, and The Great Gatsby.  Most recently he produced the Elvis film and has already won numerous awards for it too.

My wife happened to watching the recent ACTAA awards in December.  In the background I happened to hear him being awarded for the Elvis film as best producer, and was amazed at his speech.

See the YouTube link here.  You can watch the whole speech if you'd like, but skip to the 5 minute 20 mark and listen for an incredible demonstration of grace and humility.

It reminded of Jim Collins' mirror and the window analogy. Collins contends that when something goes wrong, poor leaders look at the window, and seeing their team out there, ask themselves, why didn't they get it right...  These same leaders take a win, and look in the mirror and effectively congratulate themselves for their talents and work they did! Great leaders do the opposite!!  To me, Baz did exactly this.

How often are you displaying the later example from Collins, and the grace and humility Luhrmann showed?

AND, would your team, customers, suppliers, and other stakeholders feel the same way about how you lead?

Share this with your team, and have a hearty discussion about it.

Grow well !!
